Grain Refiners

Grain refining is such a treatment of metal in a liquid state which leads to the formation of fine crystal grains and the improvement of mechanical properties of the casting.

Aluminium alloys freeze in large crystals which leads to lower the mechanical properties of the casting, retard feeding, cause shrinkage and contribute to leakage under pressure.In wrought aluminium products, coarse grain contributes to cracking.

Grain refining treatment produces a mass of minute crystals, eliminating these defects and results in-

  •   Better feeding for casting alloys

Different grades of Dhatukarm Grain-refiners and applications:

Grain Refiner Application Application Rate Remarks
Grain Refiner-2 All aluminium alloys except hypereutectic Al-Si alloys and high conductivity aluminium. 0.1-0.2 % Grain refining effect derived from the combined power of Ti and B. It is a standard and more patent Grain refiner.
Grain Refiner-6 All aluminium alloys except hypereutectic Al-Si alloys and high conductivity aluminium. 0.1-0.2 % Similar to Grain refiner-2 but grain refining by Ti only.
Grain Refiner-10 & 11 For hypereutectic Al-Si alloys. 0.2-0.4 % Refining by Al-P. More suited for alloys containing more than 15% Si.
Grain Refiner-7 All aluminium alloys except hypereutectic Al-Si alloys & high conductivity aluminium. .03-.06 % Ti and B based highly concentrated grain refiner.
Grain Refiner-18A Alloy containing more than 0.15% Ti and high conductivity aluminium. 0.1-0.2 % Only B based grain refiner.
